Brighton’s Old Steine: Upcoming Development

£62 million scheme to restore Old Steine to “its former glory” gets go-ahead

The plans include pedestrianizing part of the Old Steine, opening up a large urban park where the Churchill Square shopping center once stood. This development has been an aspiration for several years, and it is finally set to get underway in the new year.

Key Points

  • Plans include pedestrianizing part of the Old Steine
  • The Old Steine restoration scheme has received the go-ahead
  • The £62 million project is set to begin in 2023
  • The new urban park will be larger than the old Churchill Square
  • The scheme is part of a wider plan to transform the city center

Councilor Ian Davey, whose portfolio covers economic development and transport, said: “This is a significant moment for Brighton and Hove. The redevelopment of the Old Steine has been a long-held ambition for the city, and we are delighted that we have now secured the funding to make it a reality. This scheme will create a beautiful new public space for residents and visitors to enjoy, and it will also help to boost the local economy.”

The Old Steine was once a popular promenade and gardens, but it fell into decline in the 20th century. The area was blighted by traffic and pollution, and the Churchill Square shopping center, which was built in the 1960s, was seen as an eyesore.

The new scheme will see the Churchill Square demolished and replaced with a large urban park. The park will be landscaped with trees, shrubs, and flowers, and it will include a water feature and a children’s play area.

The Old Steine restoration is part of a wider plan to transform the city center. The council is also investing in new housing, shops, and restaurants, and it is working to improve public transport links.

The Old Steine restoration scheme is expected to be completed by 2025.
